Will of Jacob McClendon

In the name of God Amen
I Jacob McClendon of said State and County being of advanced age and knowing
that I must shortly depart this life deem it right and proper both as
respects
my family and myself that I should make disposition of the property with
which
a kind Providence has blessed me, do therefore make this my last Will and
Testament hereby revoking all others heretofore made by me
1st Item I desire and direct that my body be buried in a decent and
Christian like manner, suitable to my condition and circumstance in life. My
soul, I trust shall return to rest with God who gave it and hope for eternal
salvation through the merits and atonement of the blessed Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ whose religion I have professed and as I humbly trust enjoyed
for
twenty three years
2nd Item I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Annis for and during her
natural life only, the following property: Lot of land number one hundred and
forty, whereon I now live; except the Concord Church Lot and that portion of
Lot of land number one hundred and seventy four containing seventy eight
acres
more or less known as the John A. Nunnaly [?] place, all of Lot of land
number
one hundred and forty seven. All of said lands lying and being in the ninth
district of originally Monroe but now Pike County. Also I grant to my beloved
wife Annis for and during her natural life, all my household and kitchen
furniture, one choice horse or mule, two cows and calves, and five head of
dry
cattle, and two hesd of hogs, which as she may chose from all my stock.
Item 3rd I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Elizabeth Lee wife of
Joshua J. Lee free from the debts liabilities or control of her present or
any
future husbands for and during her natural life, and then to her children, an
equal portion of my Estate not heretofore disposed of and I appoint my son
Thomas L. McClendon Trustee of the property herein given and bequeathed to my
daughter Elizabeth Lee and all her children.
Item 4th I give and bequeath unto my sons William N., Robert P., Freeman,
Willard, James H., Thomas L. and Jacob J. D. in fee simple each an equal
portion of my estate not heretofore disposed.
Item 5th It is my will, wish and desire that the property herein given and
bequeathed to my wife in 2nd item, at her death be equally divided between
all
my children in the same manner, and on the same conditions as the other
property given.
Item 6th I hereby constitute and appoint my beloved Willard and Thomas L.
McClendon Executors of this my last Will and Testament This March 18th 1874

sign, seal, and heard him publish and declare the said instrument hereto
attached, as his last Will and Testament voluntarily and freely without any
compulsion and they signed said will as witnesses in the presence of said
Jacob McClendon at his request and that they saw W. T. Chapman the other
witness sign the same as witness in the presence of Testator and in the
presence of each other. The Testator was of sound disposing mind and memory
at
the time of signing the same

Mathers who signed the said Will and Testament as witnesses and whereas I am
desirous of altering and changing a bequest and devise in the third Item of
said Will and Testament I therefore make and publish this codicil to said
Will and Testament
First I revoke and annul so much of the said third item of the said Will
and Testament as relates to my appointing my son Thomas L. McClendon as
Trustee of the property therein given in said third item, and bequeathed to
my
daughter Elizabeth Lee and all her children.

In the name of God Amen
I William H. McClendon of said County and State, being of advanced age, but
of
sound and disposing mind and memory; knowing that I must shortly depart this
life, deem it right and proper both as respects my family and myself, that I
should make a disposition of the property with which a kind Providence has
blessed me: I do therefore make this my last Will and Testament hereby
revoking and annulling all others, by me heretofore made.
1st I desire and direct that all my just debts, if any, be paid without delay
by my Executor hereinafter named and appointed.
2nd I give bequeath and devise to my beloved daughter Sarah M. Maples and
Annis M. McClendon for their sole separate use as [ _ ] [ _ ]bodily heirs,
not
subject to the control or debts of any present or future husband all my
property both real and personal of every description and kind whatsoever.
Said
property to be kept together it now stands and used for the mutual benefit of
my two said daughters, unless Annis M. McClendon should marry: then and in
that event all of said property to be sold by my Executor whether privately
or
publicly as may be deemed best by him without the expense of an order from
the court and equally divided between my two beloved daughters above named,
share and share alike, And should either of my beloved daughters die without
child or children then that part of my [ _ ] belonging to the one thus
departing this life to revert back to my [ _ ] and become the property of the
one surviving and her children
3rd I desire and direct that if at any time after my death it should become
necessary or thought advisable to sell any portion of the personal property
of
my Estate, that my Executor be allowed and [ _ ] to do so either privately or
publicly as may be deemed best upon consultation with my daughters and that
said sale be had without any order from the Court for that purpose.
4th I thereby constitute and appoint my beloved son in law W. H. Maples
[ ? ] Executor of this my last Will and Testament this June 16th 1877

Rev. W.A. Brooks conducted the funeral obsequies Mr. Freeman McLendon here on
the 24th inst.
delivering one of the best and most appropriate sermons for such an occasion
it has been our pleasure
to hear in a long time. "Blessed are they who die in the Lord." In Mr.
McLendon’s death we can truly say,
a good man has gone to sleep with the righteous.

The Pike County Journal
Zebulon, Pike Co., Friday, May 18, 1894
Mr. W. H. McLendon of Concord died last Monday night of cancer of the face.
The burial occurred on Tuesday following at 2:30 p.m. The funeral services
were attended by a great
concourse of people and were impressively conducted by Rev. W.A. Brooks,
pastor of the Baptist church.
For many years Mr. McLendon has been a citizen of this county and no man can
find a stain on his
honorable and circumspect life. But to the contrary hundreds now and before
his death, were ever ready
to utter words in his praise. Whatever station he filled public or private,
he did it faithfully,
fearlessly and conscientiously, Now his tender heart can no longer respond to
words of praise or
censure, when the grave offers an asylum of repose which can be disturbed by
no words that may fall
from human lips, be it said to his credit - he did unto other as he would
have them do unto him.
He leaves a wife and five children to whom we extend our warmest sympathy.

The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, March 4, 1898
Mr. T.L. McLendon
The sudden death of Mr. T.L. McLendon which occurred at Concord last
Wednesday
evening was a shock to his many friends throughout the county.
Mr. McLendon was born and raised in Pike County. He was a good citizen and
highly respected. Since Xmas he has been living at Rover in Spalding county,
but was at Concord, his old home, on a visit to his friends. He was in his
usual health and after eating supper at Mr. J.J. Lee’s he went in town to
talk
with some friends, when he suddenly fell dead. Heart failure is supposed to
be
the cause of his death.

Mrs. J.J. Lee Dead
Mrs. J.J. Lee died at her home at Concord last Tuesday.
She had been in feeble health for a long time and while the news of her
death is sad intelligence to her large circle of friends they were not
surprised. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. E.M. Hooten of
Hampton on Wednesday.

Author: "Memoirs of Georgia" published in 1895 by the Southern Historical
Association
J. J. Lee ~ farmer, Concord, Pike Co., was born in Monroe county, Ga., in
March
1827. His parents were Bryan and Sarah (David) Lee, who were devout Christian
people and members of the Baptist church. Bryan Lee was an old resident of
Monroe county, and died in 1880, aged ninety-three years. Mr. J. J. Lee
received his schooling in the old log school house a half a century ago, and
adopted farming as his life occupation. For several years he was engaged in
the mercantile business, but now resides on his farm, where in the closing
days
of his well-spent life he finds ease and contentment in the company of his
loving family. Mr. Lee is an unassuming old gentleman who can look back upon
a
long career without a pang of regret or a tremor in his conscious. Of a sunny
disposition, a kind and sympathetic heart, liberal in purse, and a broad and
considerate mind, he has the love of everyone, and if he has an enemy in the
world nobody knows it. Mr. Lee has been a member of the Baptist church for
more than forty years, and is, by noble example as well as by theory, a
strict
temperance man. Mr. Lee was married Jan. 3, 1850, to Elizabeth McClendon, by
whom he had two children, J. H. and J. B. Lee. She is also a faithful member
of the Baptist church. Mr. John H. Lee is living in Concord, and is
proprietor
of the Lee hotel, and is also extensively engaged in farming.
