                         INTRODUCTION

The information contained in this booklet has been obtained

from many different sources, including census records, court

records, cemeteries, and most of all, from descendants of

Edward Nicholas Hathorn and Betsy Bryant.

In the old records the name was spelled HATHORN.  Somewhere

along the way someone added an "E", and today the descendants

of Napoleon Lafayette Hathorne use that spelling.  Most of

the Hathorns living today in Smith County and Jones County in

Mississippi use the old spelling.

This is intended to be the first of many drafts, to be added

to and corrected, before the final manuscript is prepared.

Please notify me of any errors and inconsistencies that you

find.  And if you have any additional information which would

make the book more complete, please send it to me.

I have written letters to many of the Hathorns living in

Smith County and Jones County, and have received only one

answer.  If anyone lives in that area, any assistance in

obtaining information from these families would be greatly

appreciated.

EDWARD NICHOLAS HATHORN

Edward Nicholas "Nick" Hathorn was born about 1805 in South

Carolina and died in Covington County, MS in 1863.  He

married Elizabeth "Betsy" Bryant, who was also born about

1805 in South Carolina and died after 1880.  They came to

Mississippi about 1825 and settled along Ocaha Creek in

Covington County.

The Covington County Tax Rolls for the years 1827, 1828,

1829, 1831 and 1832 show Edward N. Hathorn with 80 acres.

In the U. S. Census of 1830 for Covington County, Nicholas

Hathorn was shown at Household No. 145 with one male and one

female between 20 and 30 years of age, one male between 15

and 20, one male between 5 and 10, and one male under 5 years

of age.

The 1840 Census lists E. N. Hathorn with one male and one

female between 30 and 40, one male between 20 and 30, one

male between 15 and 20, and one male and one female between

10 and 15 years of age.

In the 1850 Census, on 27 August 1850, Household No. 40

included E. N. Hathorn, farmer, age 45, born in South

Carolina; Elizabeth Hathorn, age 45, born in South Carolina;

and William N. Hathorn, farmer, age 24, born in Mississippi.

Household No. 38 consisted of Robert C. Hathorn and his

family.  Robert's age was given as 25, born in South

Carolina.

In 1860, the Census shows that Household No. 271 in Covington

County included E. N. Hathorn, age 55, Elizabeth Hathorn, age

55, and Robert Hathorn and his family, consisting of his wife

and 9 children.

The Covington County, MS, Probate Court Record, Volume 2, pp.

462 ‑ 465, indicates that on 14 December 1863 Robert C. Hathorn

petitioned the court regarding the will of E. N. Hathorn,

deceased.  The petition stated that the widow, Elizabeth, and

the son, Robert C., were the only heirs.  On pp. 480 ‑ 485 of

the same record appears an appraisement of the estate of E.

N. Hathorn, deceased, including 8 slaves, with a total value

of $5,559.25.

The Executors Roll 1854 - 1864 for Covington County, MS, shows

that Robert C. Hathorn was appointed administrator of the

estate of E. N. Hathorn on 17 December 1863.  This same

record shows that on 15 February 1862 Robert had also been

appointed administrator of the estate of Albert Knight, his

father-in-law.

Volume 3 of the Probate Court Minutes of Covington County, MS

contains a number of entries regarding the estate of E. N.

Hathorn, but these have not been researched.

The Covington County Deed Records include a number of entries

for Robert C. Hathorn and his descendants, but these have not

been researched.  One deed was of special interest.  On 27

October 1869, Robert C. Hathorn sold 120 acres (N1/2 NW1/4

Section 17 and SE1/4 SE1/4 Section 18, T9N, R14W) to his

wife, Keziah Hathorn, for $300.00.  Robert once owned 80

acres at Hot Coffee, including the land where Knight's Store

is now located.

During the War Between The States, Newt Knight was the leader

of a band of deserters from the Confederate Army in Jones

County, MS, and became the basis for the popular legend of

"The Free State Of Jones".  In her book, The Echo Of The

Black Horn, Ethel Knight includes "-- a list of the names of

the Company of Newt Knight, of the Free State of Jones

County.  Organized and equipped at Salsbattery on the 13th

day of October, 1863 and commanded by Capt. Knight until the

10th day of September, 1865."  This list includes the names

of J. W. Hathorn and G. M. Hathorn.

Commenting on the fact that several people included on

Knight's list were not deserters and were not members of the

band, Mrs. Knight makes the following statement on page 99:

"The Hathorns were not deserters, and they were not Jones

Countians.  These and other names appear on the roll

that Newt kept until his death, for reasons other than

     service with him."

Newt Knight was the son of Albert Knight and Mason Rainey,

and a brother of Keziah Knight, wife of Robert C. Hathorn.

Military records in the National Archives indicate that the

following descendants of E. N. Hathorn served in the

Confederate Army in the War Between The States:

     G. M. Hathorn, Co. B, 46 Miss. Infantry

     J. W. Hathorn, Co. K, 12 Miss. Cavalry

     R. C. Hathorn, private and sergeant, Co. H., 12 Miss.

          Cavalry

     R. C. Hathorn (Robert Hathorn), Co. D, 2 (Quinn's) State

          Troops, Miss. Infantry

The following appears on page 245 of Volume V, Centenary

Series, at the Mississippi Department of Archives and

History:

    "July 22d, 1862.‑‑‑‑‑J. M. Speed and R. C. Hathorn, both

of our community, reached camp on the 16th, to see their

sons, who were both away at the hospital.  They bring

     discouraging reports of the crops."

Daniel B. Hathorn apparently was a close friend of William

Cicero Sullivan, known as the "King" of Sullivan's Hollow in

Smith County.  In her book, Wild Bill Sullivan – King of the

Hollow, Ann R. Hammons describes "‑the bloodiest fight the

Hollow ever knew." on page 65.  It seems that Wild Bill

Sullivan had whipped Gabe Chain in a fight, and to get even,

Chain intended to kill Bill's brother, Neece, at Shiloh

Church in Covington County.  Chain and his friends attacked

Neece Sullivan, Frank Gibbeons and Dan Hathorn at the spring

near the church, and a bloody fight ensued.  When one of the

Chain gang slumped to the ground, another asked him if he was

hurt much, and Dan Hathorn answered, "You damn right he is

hurt.  He is dead as hell."  Gabe Chain was also killed in

the fight.  Dan Hathorn saved Neece Sullivan by pulling two

guns and warning the others that "If you touch him, you are

dead men."

On page 99 of that same book, the following story appears:

"Many acts of violence occurred at the sawmill at Bunker

Hill.  This sawmill, a sash mill, was first erected by

Francis Marion Howell and Wiley Sullivan.  At one time,

when a man named Eaton attempted to kill his brother‑in‑

law, Hathorn, to obtain possession of it, Eaton stabbed

Hathorn three times in the back, and two shots were put

through his chest by a man named Yawn who accompanied

Eaton.  While Eaton was stabbing him, Hathorn seized his

own pistol and shot Eaton through the heart and killed

him.  Hathorn recovered from his wounds and lived

     eighteen years after this incident."

The Hathorn referred to was Daniel B. Hathorn.  The Eaton was

Harvey Orange "Babe" Eaton, Jr., who was married to Dan's

sister, Martha Ann Hathorn, and was the son of H. O. Eaton

and Jane Hathorn, daughter of Samuel Hathorn, who lived near

the present town of Bassfield in Jefferson Davis County, MS,

but was then a part of Covington County.
