How to search USGenWeb Archives effectively.
What USGenWeb techs need to tell us.
July 13, 2007
I was using the USGenWeb / LAGenWeb Search Engine when I clicked on the "Advanced" tab/link, then I clicked on the "HELP" link. There I found this message that said, in part:
... "I don't have a definition for the "File Type" and "File SubType" fields in the ADVANCED SEARCH form at this time."
I can tell you some of the "File Type"s are: bible, bios, cemeteries, census, churches, court, deeds, history, military, newspapers, obits, vitals and "File SubType" fields are sub-division of those directories.
("File Type" does not refer to the file format, e.g. TXT, GED, RTF, HTM, DOC, etc." in this case.)
"File Type" refers to: bible, bios, cemeteries, census, churches, court, deeds, history, military, newspapers, obits, vitals or any subdivision lower than State and County assuming that you type in the state and county into the box.
| IMPORTANT: You can not just type in the County or Parish of the State that you want to search because they have been truncated in some cases, if they are long, etc. So you need the refer to the USGenWeb main directory to see how it is listed. |
For example: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/washingt/: (Use Washingt as the name of the parish because using Washington does not work! The tech people could probably writes some code to take care of that.) For example, click here to see how the Louisiana Parishes are abbreviated.

"File SubType" would be subdirectory below cemeteries, in this case:
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/washingt/cemeteries/

I can search for a listing that contain the name, say, McCLENDON, in the "File Type": cemeteries and I will get results only from subdirectories named /cemeteries. I will not find the words McCLENDON in a subdirectory called /wills, for example. It helps a lot if I'm only wanting to search for birth and death dates of someone and my best shot would be in cemeteries, but that is not to say that birth and death dates of someone won't be found in other directories. Also, if I wanted to search the /wills (wills directory) I would not be overloaded with cemetery listings, etc. The added bonus is that it doesn't overwork the servers.
| EXAMPLE: You can "Search
for" more than one surname (or whatever you are searching for) etc.,
in more than one County/Parish, and for more than one "File Type" and more than one "File
SubType," etc. Click on the "Submit" button to see the results:
